THAI PERFUMES

Characteristics of Thai Perfumes and Recommended Brands

Perfume Geek K

Hello, I’m a perfume enthusiast. It seems that the article I wrote about Thai perfume shops is the most-read article on our website. I’ve been told by shop owners that readers have visited their stores after reading my article, and they have expressed their gratitude. I’m glad I could be of help.

Thank you for reading my ramblings!!! I hope you’ll enjoy this article as well.

In this article, I will briefly introduce the characteristics of Thai perfumes and some Thai perfume brands. It has been almost six months since I came to Thailand and started getting involved with Thai perfumes… I’m still at a beginner level, but I hope this will be helpful for you when you travel to Thailand.

Characteristics of Thai Perfumes

Despite having a high concentration of fragrance, it is easy to wear

The concentration of fragrance in Thai perfumes varies depending on the brand and perfume, but many have over 10%.

This is closely related to Thailand’s climate. While Japan has four seasons, Thailand only has the dry season and the rainy season, and it’s hot all year round. In Bangkok, where I live, the temperature has never dropped below 20°C. Walking outside can be quite humid, and it’s easy to sweat, causing the scent of the perfume to fade quickly.

It might be easier to understand if you imagine it being like Japanese summer all year round.

Thai perfumes are made for people living in Thailand, so they tend to have a higher concentration of fragrance compared to European perfumes to ensure the scent doesn’t fade quickly. Additionally, since scents that suit the peak of summer are preferred, even when oud is used, it surprisingly doesn’t feel heavy.

If you’re wondering what “fragrance concentration” means, please check the explanation provided here.

Many perfumers in Thailand are self-taught, resulting in uniquely crafted scents.

While some perfumers in Europe and the United States are self-taught, many have graduated from specialized perfume schools. In contrast, in Thailand, many perfumers are self-taught.

I organized private brand introductions and sessions by Thai perfumers at exhibitions in Europe, and their unique scents received high praise from perfume enthusiasts. I believe this uniqueness is largely attributed to their self-taught approach to perfume-making.

There are various themes as well.

Perfumers decide on a theme for their fragrance before creating it, aligning their composition with that theme. Themes can vary widely. What makes Thai perfumes unique is their exploration of themes that are not often addressed by Western brands, such as daily life, movies, or expressions of Thai society.

Thais seem to have a fondness for traveling to Japan, and even Thai brands offer many perfumes themed after landscapes and scenes from Japan that travelers might encounter. This means that even for Japanese consumers, there are plenty of perfumes to discover that are easy to wear and evoke a sense of attachment.

STRANGERS PARFUMERIE

One of the most famous niche fragrance brands in Thailand, founded by Prin Lomros, is Strangers Parfumerie. Prin also has two other brands, PARFUM PRISSANA and PRIN. As he himself acknowledges, Strangers Parfumerie offers a wide range of easily wearable scents, so I recommend trying them first.

SIAM 1928

This is a niche fragrance brand from Thailand created by Nutt Wesshasartar. Siam1928 is a perfume brand themed around Thailand, with all bottles crafted from ceramic in designs that make you want to collect them. Another brand by Nutt Wesshasartar is Voyager, which focuses on everyday life as its main theme and is also easy to wear. They offer shipping to Japan as well.

TADA PARFUMEUR

This brand is created by Tada Archawong, featuring many perfumes themed around Japan, which Japanese people would appreciate. That’s my honest impression—there are quite a few perfumes that appeal to Japanese tastes. They even have unique fragrances themed after Japanese sake in collaboration with Japan’s Enishiki brewery. Their website is currently under construction, and they plan to offer shipping to Japan in the future.

PRATINTIP ARTIST PERFUMES

This brand is created by Pratintip Manusopis, who is a female perfumer. She prioritizes the theme conveyed by her perfumes over individual notes. For example, “Powerful of Femininity” sends a message of support to women in Thailand’s sex industry. Her themes are chosen from interesting perspectives, whether it’s Thailand’s nature or society.
