THE CONCEPT
Love, remembrance, emotions, and tragedy continuously ebb and flow like the ocean’s waves crashing upon the shore. In every moment, whether during high or low tide, these waves persistently etch their traces upon the sands. This is the essence of the poem that captures the mermaid’s love in “Phra-apaimanee,” a 1,200-page masterpiece penned by the illustrious poet, “Phra Soonthornvoharn,” also known as “Soonthorn Pu,” of the Rattanakosin Kingdom.
In the novel, a mermaid is depicted as a creature with the upper body of a beautiful woman and the lower body of a fish. She dwells in the ocean with her family but tragically loses them while saving Phra-apaimanee from the onslaught of the Ocean Butterfly Giant. The mermaid and Phra-apaimanee find refuge on an island called “Koh Keaw Pitsadarn,” where they fall in love and have a son together.
Eventually, Phra-apaimanee departs from the mermaid to explore the world. Left alone, she gives birth to a human boy—a child she cannot raise, as her home is in the ocean. Desperate for help, the mermaid entrusts her son to a wise ascetic, seeking his assistance in raising the child.
This perfume, “Assan,” draws its inspiration from this poignant tale, which mean “The Tears of the Ocean”. The fragrance encapsulates the mermaid’s three heart-rending experiences: the loss of her family, her lover’s departure, and the relinquishment of her child. The perfume’s top note exudes a gentle Neroli aroma interwoven with Lavender and Aquozone undertones, reflecting the seascape. At its heart, the scent features Jasmine Absolute, harmonized with Labdanum. In Thai culture, jasmine symbolizes benevolent intentions, pure love, and gratitude, perfectly mirroring the mermaid’s emotions towards her family and child. Finally, after weathering all her tribulations, the perfume’s base note emanates the calm, waveless essence of the sea, as it descends into the ocean’s deepest depths.

MY THOUGHTS
A white floral fragrance centered around jasmine. This is the jasmine perfume. If you love the green yet floral scent of jasmine, it’s definitely worth trying. True to its concept, the most memorable aspect is the crisp and elegant jasmine scent. While the top notes aren’t noticeable on a tester strip, a faint aroma of neroli and lavender emerges when applied to the skin. The top notes disappear quickly, but the heart notes last for over three hours.
Without a doubt, this is a jasmine perfume, but ASSAN’s theme is the Little Mermaid. The labdanum isn’t very prominent, but the oakmoss conveys the scent of the sea. While jasmine lingers faintly in the base notes, oakmoss and musk represent the mermaid and the calmness of the ocean.
