THE CONCEPT
A CRY FOR FREEDOM
Despite being the largest sandy desert on earth, the Kalahari is home to a lush flora thanks to the omiramba – ancient riverbeds that are still rich in moisture. In the evening, as the sun is setting and the stars are coming out, you can hear the stars crying out, as Bushman legend has it. Inspired by the ancestral symbol of the majestic baobab tree, whose thousand-year-old wood contains the entire history of Africa, this fragrance, with its overdosed woody notes, is almost palpable as the ribbed texture carved into this massive trunk unfolds beneath your fingers. A meticulous blend of sandalwood, cedarwood and a hint of patchouli, punctuated by a sprinkling of green pepper like stardust, this powerful fragrance is an enchanting invitation to the arid lands of the Kalahari.

MY THOUGHTS
My first woody fragrance purchase was CRI DU KALAHARI. Despite being a woody scent, it’s remarkably light and easy to wear. Created by perfumer Sonia Constant, it has a gentle and enveloping aroma. It’s unisex and suitable for both commuting and school, yet it boasts impressive longevity on my skin, lasting about 5 to 6 hours.
The top notes feature green pepper, giving it a fresh, invigorating scent. However, thanks to the orris, the pepper’s spiciness is mellowed. On my skin, the top notes fade quickly, but on a blotter, they linger longer.
The heart note, baobab wood, is the standout feature of CRI DU KALAHARI. The soft wood scent remains on the skin, providing a soothing effect, especially when I’m tired. The baobab wood’s fragrance isn’t a deep woody scent; it’s more like the “fresh wood scent” of an old church combined with water, evoking the abundant moisture of the Kalahari Desert. The fragrance blends well with my skin, leaving a lingering, simple wood scent, indicating good longevity on my skin.
Available in Japan, I highly recommend this to anyone who appreciates Sonia Constant’s creations.
